New York

Five boroughs, a hundred cities, all running at once.

Overview

New York refuses summary. Read one neighbourhood at a time: Greenpoint over coffee, the Lower East Side after dark, the Bronx through its food, Manhattan from a Staten Island ferry returning at golden hour.

Neighbourhoods

  • West Village
Quiet brownstones and the best evening walks.
  • Williamsburg
    Brooklyn's loud, design-led waterfront.
  • Harlem
Jazz history, soul food, brownstone grandeur.
  • Lower East Side
Vintage shops, dive bars, immigrant memory.

Top Landmarks

  • The High Line
An elevated park along a former rail line.
  • Brooklyn Bridge at dawn
Walk east, watch Manhattan light up.
  • The Met
A day, easily — start with the rooftop in summer.
  • Staten Island Ferry
Free, every twenty minutes, best views in the city.

Food & Cafés

  • Russ & Daughters
Appetizing on the Lower East Side, since 1914.
  • Joe's Pizza
A folded slice on Carmine Street.
  • Di Fara
Brooklyn pizza, made one pie at a time.
  • Smorgasburg
Outdoor food market — Saturdays in Williamsburg.

Getting Around

The subway runs 24/7. A single ride or unlimited weekly OMNY tap is the way. Yellow cabs and Citi Bike fill the gaps; walking remains the fastest way to feel the city.

Sample Itinerary

  1. Day 1
Lower Manhattan, the ferry, dinner in the Village.
  2. Day 2
Met museum, Central Park, sunset on the High Line.
  3. Day 3
Brooklyn — Greenpoint coffee, Williamsburg, jazz in Harlem.

Local Notes

  • Tipping is mandatory — 18–20% in restaurants, $1–2 a drink at a bar.
  • Stand right, walk left on escalators and sidewalks.
  • Most museums have a suggested-price evening on Fridays.
  • It is always colder at night than you expect.
